Dudhope Castle

Dudhope Castle

In 1792 a plan was established for a woollen factory in Dundee. Dudhope Castle had been rented for this reason, but the project didn't get the chance to develop. The Government of the time decided to set up Military Barracks throughout Britain. Dundee was to be one of the locations.

In 1795 a lease was taken by the Ordnance Office for the Castle and the Park of Dudhope for a period of 95 years. The Castle was furnished to accommodate up to 400 soldiers. A hospital, Officer's Quarters, Guard-rooms and Stables were built in the grounds.
The Castle was used as a barracks from 1796 to 1879, it ceased being used by the army in 1881

Tay Railway Bridge

The Tay Railway Bridge

When the first Tay Bridge was opened on May the 31st 1878, it was the world's longest single span bridge. It was designed and constructed by Sir Thomas Bouch. That bridge only lasted until the 28th of December 1879.

It was blown down during a freak storm by hurricane force winds. A train had been crossing the bridge during the storm, and tragically the lives of 70 people were lost.
